About Montblanc
Montblanc is one of the most recognised luxury brands in the world. Founded in Hamburg in 1906, the company has been producing fine writing instruments for over a century and the Montblanc Meisterstück, first introduced in 1924, remains one of the most iconic objects ever designed. For many people, a Montblanc pen represents the pinnacle of what a writing instrument can be: a combination of exceptional craftsmanship, timeless design, and genuine writing performance.
The History of Montblanc
Montblanc was founded in 1906 in Hamburg, Germany, by stationer Claus-Johannes Voss, banker Alfred Nehemias, and engineer August Eberstein. The company was initially called the Simplo Filler Pen Company, and their early pens were sold under the Rouge et Noir name before the Montblanc brand was established in 1910.
The name Montblanc, after the highest peak in the Alps, was chosen to evoke quality and aspiration. The distinctive white star emblem on the cap represents the snowcapped summit of Mont Blanc viewed from above, and has been a signature of the brand ever since.
The Meisterstück (German for "masterpiece") was introduced in 1924 and quickly became the definitive Montblanc pen. It has been in continuous production ever since, making it one of the longest-running pen designs in history. Today, Montblanc is owned by the Richemont luxury group and produces pens, watches, leather goods, and accessories alongside their writing instruments. The Montblanc Range
Montblanc Meisterstück
The Meisterstück is the heart of the Montblanc range and one of the most celebrated fountain pens ever made. Available in several sizes, including the 145 (Classique), 146 (Le Grand), and 149 (the largest and most prestigious), the Meisterstück features an 18-carat gold nib, a piston filling mechanism, and the iconic black resin body with gold or platinum trim. It is available in a range of finishes including the classic black and gold, platinum-trimmed, and various special editions.
The 149 in particular is considered by many enthusiasts to be the definitive luxury fountain pen, substantial, beautifully balanced, and a genuine pleasure to write with. See our nib width guide to help choose the right size.
Montblanc Meisterstück Solitaire
The Solitaire is the premium tier of the Meisterstück range, featuring precious metal bodies in sterling silver, gold-plated, and other luxury finishes. These are collector's pens of the highest order.
Montblanc StarWalker
The StarWalker is a more contemporary design, with a slimmer profile and a distinctive floating white star visible through a transparent dome in the cap. Available in a range of materials including metal, resin, and carbon fibre, the StarWalker appeals to writers who want Montblanc quality with a more modern aesthetic.
Montblanc Bohème
The Bohème is a slim, elegant pen with a retractable nib, a rare feature in a luxury fountain pen. Designed for writers who want the convenience of a capless pen without sacrificing writing quality, the Bohème is available in a range of finishes including precious stone accents.
Montblanc Heritage and Patron of Art Editions
Montblanc regularly release limited and special edition pens celebrating historical figures, artistic movements, and cultural milestones. These editions are highly collectible and often feature unique materials, engravings, and nib designs. Past editions have celebrated figures including Leonardo da Vinci, Mozart, and Voltaire.
Montblanc Inks
Montblanc produce a well-regarded range of bottled inks in classic and contemporary colours. Their inks are known for reliable flow, good behaviour in a wide range of pens, and elegant packaging. The Montblanc ink bottle itself, with its distinctive inkwell shape, is an object of beauty in its own right. For guidance on using bottled ink, see our guide to using an ink converter.
