About Diamine
One of a diminishing number of UK-based ink producers, Diamine are a jewel in the crown of the British fountain pen market. Established in 1864 in Liverpool, the company has continually remained loyal to their roots and still produce organic inks with a hands-on, careful approach. They proudly state they have only adjusted their original formulas where necessary to comply with current legislation.
Since their inception, Diamine have grown in accordance with demand. In 1925 they moved from their original premises to a purpose-built factory in Liverpool, and have since relocated to their current home near the world-famous Aintree Racecourse. Despite the changes, the Diamine trademark and production ethos have remained consistent. Today, the name symbolises the finest quality in fountain pen, calligraphy, and drawing inks.
Notable Moments
Diamine's inks have been used at the highest levels. Presidents Obama and Medvedev used Diamine ink when signing the 2010 nuclear arms treaty. The Monaco Red colour was specially devised for His Serene Highness Prince Rainier III of Monaco in conjunction with a limited-edition fountain pen presentation. With hundreds of colours in their range, Diamine inks are water-based, acid-free, and non-toxic.
The Ink Ranges
Standard Inks
Diamine's core range is one of the most extensive available from any single manufacturer, spanning well over 100 colours. From classic blacks and blues to vivid greens, purples, and oranges, there is a Diamine ink for every taste and occasion. Available in 30ml and 80ml glass bottles, as well as standard cartridges. See our guide to the blackest inks if you are looking for a deep, dark black.
Shimmer Inks
The Shimmer range takes Diamine's top-quality ink and adds beautiful metallic flecks that catch the light on the page. Available in a wide spectrum of colours, Shimmer inks are particularly popular for journalling, correspondence, and creative writing. They work best with broader nibs and wetter pens to allow the shimmer particles to flow freely. For full usage tips, see our shimmer ink usage guide.
Sheen Inks
Diamine's Sheen collection produces a striking two-tone effect on the page, with the ink appearing one colour when dry but revealing a contrasting sheen -- often red, green, or gold -- when pooled or viewed at an angle. These inks are a favourite among enthusiasts who enjoy the more expressive side of fountain pen writing.
Inkvent and Limited Editions
Each year, Diamine release their popular Inkvent calendar -- an advent calendar containing 25 miniature bottles of ink, many of which are exclusive to the calendar. These limited releases are eagerly anticipated by collectors and make an exceptional gift for any fountain pen enthusiast.
Diamine x Pure Pens: Alexandrite
We are proud to have collaborated with Diamine to produce our own exclusive ink: Alexandrite. Created to celebrate Pure Pens' 15th anniversary in 2019, Alexandrite takes its name from the gemstone celebrated for its colour-changing properties -- exuding a deep teal in daylight and graduating to a rich red at dusk. It is our best-selling ink and is available in both standard and shimmer variants. Read more about our commitment to British and Welsh makers.
