Pelikan's story originates in 1838 when chemist Carl Hornemann founded a small company to produce ink and water colours. Based out of Hanover, Germany, the Pelikan logo itself is borne from his family's coat of arms and is now synonymous with one of the oldest brands in Germany.
Pelikan are famed for their 1929 invention of the differentiated piston filling mechanism. In the following decades, the company established its international reputation for manufacturing high-quality, plush fountain pens.
The Pelikan M1000 in all-black possesses a high-quality resin with 24c gold plated trim and 18c gold nib with rhodium decoration (available in a range of widths.) The small ink view window towards the nib-end is coloured transparent green but becomes black when ink is inside the pen.
This very large piston filling pen is the flagship of the Pelikan Souveran range and is the largest pen of the collection. It weighs 33g, and measures 14.5cm in length closed or 17.7cm posted. The capacity of the barrel holds 2.0ml of ink (a standard short cartridge holding 0.75 ml and a standard large cartridge holding 1.45ml.)
The M1000 comes in a smart Pelikan gift box with a faux leather case to protect the pen, which although probably not suitable for everyday use, is a nice addition nonetheless. It comes with Pelikan's three-year warrantee.
